Apple's iPhone is a nifty little rid. You can browse the world-wide web, play games, send and receive email, make calls and do many other useful things, and now thanks to Apple's connections with Google, the iPhone may now have the biggest killer app of them all - Google's Voice Search. When it was learned, several days ago, that Google Voice Search was coming to the iPhone, people actually expected it to arrive immediately. However, when it didn't arrive for 3 or so days, there was much speculation as to why, and some even feared and speculated that Apple may have been even foolish enough to ban it. After all, it has already banned several other cool apps. Any fears that people may have banned it, however, has thankfully been proven to be unfounded as Google's latest and greatest has finally made it's way into the App Store.Google's Voice Search does basically what it's name implies - search's Google by simply talking into the phone! Wow, I must say that if your a lazy person (like me) or if you just hate to type, can't type well, or maybe you can't type a word to save your life - then this app is definitely for you!And so far, judging from the reaction of many who have tried Google's Voice Search - it's a winner! The Inquirer even went so far as to report that it could very well be the iPhone's "Killer App"! Indeed, it may, and after watching Google's demo of the app in action, it looks to me to be absolutely amazing, as you can judge for yourself by clicking on the YouTube video above.

1 Vote(s)

Since I'm not able to do a regular posting today, I will at least like to take the time to comment on an interesting post in yesterdays TechEblog. The post is about a Japanese Apple fan who likes to grow Apples on his apples! Yes, you read that right - he loves to grow apples on his apple's! But how do you do that, you say? Well, apparently, by simply blocking sunlight from certain parts of an apple, while it's still in it's growing faze, it will leave it's mark in the shape of what ever is blocking it when it fully ripens! Thats correct, my faithful two or three readers, why this cleaver Apple fan actually went to the time and the trouble of blocking parts of his still growing apples with special stickers - specifically, stickers of Apple and iPod logos, as you can see from the photo above! Who would have thunked such a thing? Not little old me, that's who.

2 Vote(s)

On June 4, 1977, one of the most famous and one of the biggest selling personal computers of all time, the Apple II, went on sale for the very first time. Even though other personal computers were on the market before the Apple II, they were mostly kits, computers that you had to put together yourself, kits that took a lot of tech knowledge and hand holding to be able to use. The Apple II, many people felt, was different - it was the very first one that you could actually use straight out of the box - the world's first user freindly machine, and as such I have made it my, 'Blast-From-the-Day' feature for today. The Apple II was a vast improvement over it's predecessor, the Apple I, as it included color video output, eight internal expansion slots and a built-in keyboard, a rarity at the time. It used the BASIC programing language as it's OS and it's expansion slots easily allowed it's users to expand the computers capabilities with various cards, either from Apple or from others, which enabled memory expansion, the addition of floppy disk controllers, PASCAL, CP/M emulator cards, parallel, serial, SCSI and, as well, processor accelerators cards and what have you.Originally, as stated, the Apple II came with it's operating system in BASIC and burned onto a ROM chip, but later Apple DOS was added to support the diskette drive. This was later replaced by Apple ProDOS which allowed the Apple II to support a hierarchical filesystem and much larger storage devices. The first real spreadsheet, VIsiCalc, greatly helped the Apple II's popularity to sky-rocket. That popularity continued throughout the 80's and the 90's and it quickly became the de-facto standard computer used in American education. In fact, many of these machines are still operational in some schools even today. The Apple II series of computers eventually grew into a family line which included the following models:- The Apple II- Apple II Plus- Apple II Europlus and J-Plus- Apple IIe- Apple IIc- Apple IIGS- Apple IIc Plus

2 Vote(s)

It's Friday and time for my second, 'Top 5 Apple Posts of the Past Week' feature. My first top pick for the past week is a post called, "15 reasons Macs are still better than Windows". This is a great post that highlights some pretty sound reasons as to why, including these five:1 - Reliable sleep mode. I have personally wowed several Windows users with this feature, one that I now couldn't live without. This is one feature that I use a lot and I too think that it makes for a very compelling reason for anyone considering a Mac. No wonder why they say it's a ".....killer feature of every Mac which can't be underestimated."2 - Extremely fast boot times. Enough said. 3 - Apple uses good quality parts. What can I say, " you get what you pay for!"4 - Less blinking lights. A biggy in my book.5 - OS X + Windows is better than just Windows. This is one of the biggest advantages of owning a Mac - you can, if you wish, have the whole cake and eat it too! With a Mac, it means you never have to feel left out or left behind, because not only can you enjoy all of the benefits of the OS X platform and not only all of the benefits of the Windows platform, but also all of the benefits of the Linux platform as well!Of course, APC has ten more solid reasons as to why buying a Mac is still a far better deal then buying a cheaper, but less capable computer which you can discover for yourself by clicking on their link above.

2 Vote(s)

The new MacBook and MacBook Pro's are certainly sexy, powerful and thanks to their new 'unibody' construction, they are also most certainly strong and durable. They are the new pinnacle in a long line of Apple laptops that goes all the way back to 1989. That was the year that Apple unleashed it's very first laptop, which was known simply as the Macintosh Portable, which happens to be my 'Blast-From-the-Past' feature for the day.The Macintosh Portable was more than just Apple's first laptop - it was also one of it's biggest failures and considered by some to be one of the very worst tech products of all time! The reasons are simple as they were many. For starters, the all white laptop weighed in at a hefty neck breaking 15.8 pounds! Secondly, it sold for the mind-blowing sum of $6,500 dollars and that's without a hard drive! That little option would set you back another $800 dollars! A back lit option was another $1,900 or so! And to think that was also in 1989 dollars, which, in today's dollars, works out to be something like 8 or 9 trillion bucks in todays dollars, give or take a dime! Not really, but considering that the latest MacBooks are so much more powerful, feature rich and start at a mere $999, the newer Apple laptops seem like downright bargains. And to think that people complain about the glossy screen..... pleeeease!

2 Vote(s)

Several sites are reporting that Apple may be about to take on the giants of the hand-held gaming world, Sony and Nintendo. BBC's Newsbeat, for instance, stated that out of the first 6,000 apps created for the iPhone and the iPod Touch, some 1,500 or so are games. This is a remarkable statistic anyway that you look at it, and especially when you consider that all of those 6,000 apps, including those 1,500 plus games, were created in only the first 100 days of the App Store! So, could Apple really be serious about taking on the gaming world - can Apple really make a big gaming impact?Of course, not all of those apps, all of those games, are necessarily of the highest quality, but many of them are. Many of the games now available for the Touch and iPhone are just as compelling as any of the games found on either the Sony PSP 3 or the Nintendo DS units. In fact, some of them are actually better then a lot of the games that you can find on higher end consoles like the PS 3 or the X-Box 360! What really sets the Apple devices apart, from those of the others, is it's distribution model of being able to buy and download games directly, versus the older and traditional model of selling physical cartridges. Not only is Apple's App store more convenient and a lot quicker, it's also, at the same time - a lot cheaper! Downloading games for Apple's newest devices means that they can sell for only a fraction of the price of game cartridges. Producing game cartridges is not only more expensive to manufacture, but actually shipping and storing them presents added costs that Apple's download model doesn't have to worry about

2 Vote(s)

Just what many Mac fans have been hoping for has finally arrived, but sadly they can't buy one! What I'm talking about is the story of a new MacBook Nano that has been circulating on various web sites lately, and as you can see from the Gizmodo's photo montage above.Personally, even though I would much more prefer one of those recently introduced MacBook Pro's, I have to admit, by judging from the photos, this thing looks to be a very desirable machine indeed. The size of the thing is absolutely amazing - it's so tiny, especially when compared with existing MacBooks including the Air. I'm sure one could lug that thing around all day without any problems what's-so-ever. The Gizmodo writer says that he doesn't know if it's some kind of 'Hackintosh,' or what, but it sadly that's all it is. I'm sure who ever created this thing could make a small fortune by building and selling them, except, of course, that would be illegal. You can see a lot more photos of this amazingly real, but amazingly really fake MacBook Nano on Mickphoto's Flickr photostream. Here you can see the MacBook Nano as it is apparently being put together. Oh, how I only wish that I had the spare time and cash, not to mention the patience and the technical ability to pull it off myself. It sure would make a great conversation piece, and for that reason alone I would love to have one.As MacRumor's points out, this really fake MacBook Nano is actually an MSI U100 netbook, which you can see reviewed here on YouTube. So, just what do I think? Well, as far as my two-cents goes, I think that the guy did an amazing job building this thing, but I just can't help but wonder just how much better, just how much cooler, just how much sexier and just how much more usable such a MacBook Nano would be if Apple actually created one itself? I would think that if an individual can come up with such an amazing machine as the one above, well, then just imagine what Apple could do?

2 Vote(s)

It's another day and you can mark up another victory for the Jesus Phone. That's right, shortly after Apple just announced that it had sold more iPhone's than RIM's popularly Blackberry, it has been announced that Apple's iPhone has just replaced the RAZR's three-year reign as the most purchased mobile phone in the U.S!According to market research firm NPD, the iPhone trumped the RAZR as the biggest selling mobile phone, relegating the RAZR into second place, followed by Research in Motion's Blackberry Curve for third place, while LG's Rumor and enV2 respectively took the fourth and fifth spots.Apple Insider reported that NPD's director of industry analysis, Ross Bubin, said:"The displacement of the RAZR by the iPhone 3G represents a watershed shift in handset design from fashion to fashionable functionality".Wow! This truly is remarkable when you really think about it. Despite all of the nay sayer's predictions that the iPhone would ultimately fail, and after being down played by the competition, who said one thing, and then, after pooh poohing the iPhone, tried to kill it off by copying it's looks and features, the iPhone continues it's steady march upwards! So far, I'm happy to report that all of their efforts, thus far at least, have failed, as the iPhone continues to go from strength to strength. The iPhone, despite the competition's claims that it didn't need to worry about it, has managed to become the phone that everyone lusts after and the one that everyone tries to duplicate. And no wonder - the iPhone was totally unlike any phone that had gone before. It's the phone of the future, not the phone of the past, as were the competition. Apple truly applied their famous, "Think Different" approach when it came to the design and manufacture of the iPhone. In other words: the iPhone broke the mold, and since then, every other cell phone provider has been bending over backwards to come up with their own version of the iPhone. They certainly have gotten closer, but still none none of them are quite as good, overall, as it.

2 Vote(s)

In an amazingly short 18 months, the iPhone, an amazing device in and of itself, has amazingly turned Apple into the second largest smart phone provider in the world, after Nokia and ahead of RIM! One of the most amazing things, about all of this, is the fact that despite warnings from many companies for Apple NOT to get into the business, because it was next to impossible for new comers to get a foot hold into the market - Apple turned around and did just that! Why, even Bill Gates, personally, a day or two before the iPhone was launched, warned Apple that they be better off not to attempt it, because, why, the big players were just too entrenched for Apple, or anybody else, to even make a dent.Well, in addition to Apple making a big dent, here's another amazing fact: the iPhone has now become the smart phone with the highest satisfaction rating of them all - period! But that's not all! No, in addition to that amazing fact, here is yet another one: this satisfaction rate happens to be among business users, the very one's that every one warned would hate the iPhone the most! I can still see Steve Ballmer laughing the iPhone off as a business phone when I read that particular piece of news. Truly amazing, and I only hope that Mr. Ballmer gets to see the J.D. Since Apple has already let it be officially known that they will not be introducing any Mac updates for the upcoming holiday season, it certainly seems likely that both the Mini and the iMac, and quite possibly the Mac Pro, will indeed be introduced at next year's MacWorld in January. But what can we expect?
With the success of gaming on the iPhone and the iPod Touch already well under way, is Apple on the verge of becoming a real and credible threat to Sony and Nintendo? Should they be fearful of Apple? That is a question that is beginning to be asked in many circles.Bussiness Week is just one who is not only asking, but who is also increasingly beginning to believe that Apple may indeed be a force to reckon with in the area of mobile gaming. Business Week points out that games running on Apple's two hit mobile devices are a lot more than just simple and crude versions of solitaire. Arik Hesseldahl, writing for Business Week recently wrote:"I didn't expect much from games on the iPhone. I had visions of casual games, perhaps a fancy take on solitaire or a version of poker that takes advantage of the handset's touchscreen. Surely not a true mobile gaming experience. Boy, was I wrong. For the last few days I've been sampling some of the games available from the iTunes Store on the iPod Touch, and I've been stunned at how elaborate and involved they are. On the iPod Touch I've played a version of Gameloft's Real Soccer 2009 that rivals the version of the game on the Nintendo DS, and I didn't even miss the buttons. I've seen demonstrations of Sim City, forthcoming for the iPhone and the Touch from Electronic Arts (ERTS), that look more elaborate and sophisticated than any versions I've played before on a desktop PC or console."He's not the only one who has noticed either. A lot of people have been impressed by both the quality and the sheer number of the games which are now available for Apple's two hot-selling mobile devices. As Arik says, " Theyr'e immersive, addictive fun." And so they are. As he also points out, Sony has less then 300 title's available for it's popular PSP 3, and yet, in very short order, Apple can now boast of well over 1,500 games, games which are growing exponentially in number and sophistication with each and every passing day! Quite the feat I would say.

1 Vote(s)

This brings me to the President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev and two photos that MacinStein recently posted of the young president, as he proudly works along side his comrades with his MacBook Pro in tow. Apparently, we see the MacBook Pro helping to assist the president in the important task of ruling the immense country's 147 million or so citizens.
Over the past week many stories, about Apple related things, where published and that got my eye. So, today, I would like to point out the five top stories that I found were especially interesting, informative and useful. Here, presented below, are my top five stories for the past week, ones that, if you haven't already read them, I thought you may find interesting as well.So here they are:My first interesting post, Apple more undervalued than others tech heavyweights is from AppleInsider, one of the best all-round Mac sites on the net. In this story, they bring to attention something that has always intrigued me and made me wonder: why is Google's value and market cap so much higher than Apple's? After all, Apple brings in more money, has higher profits and what have you? This has always been a mystery to me, and, at last, with the help of this very informative post I now at least have a better understanding of how Wall Street comes to value various individual companies. Mind you, I don't think for a moment, that their methods are actually very fair or reflect a company's true worth, which, of course, helps to explain Apple's lesser value vs Google's. In the end, this post is very informative and well worth the read if you, at all, have an interest in the wacky world of high finance.

2 Vote(s)

This year, in the reader choice section, MacUser readers named Leopard as Apple's product of the year, but MacUser's staff favored and picked Aperture, which won for best graphic program, while readers gave the most innovative product of the year award to the diminutive, and dare I say 'sexy' - MacBook Air. In the Reader Awards, Shure SE110 won the audio award of the year, while the video award for the year went to Adobe's After Effects CS3 Professional. The Nikon D3, a camera that I would just love to get my hands on, was named camera of the year. Good choice. In the Editorial Awards, ProjectWizards Merlin 2.5 took home the top honors. As well, in the Readers Awards, that sexy looking MacBook Air scored again, winning it's second Innovation for the year award! The little laptop that could, did it again! You can read the full list of winners at MacUser if your interested. What got me thinking, while reading the MacUser awards list, was who would I personally give an award to, if I were in the award giving business, that is? So, after giving it a thought, and not a long one at that, I have decided to do just that - give out the following M2C Awards for the Year (My-2-Cents Awards) to the following:

2 Vote(s)

I remember a time when, every month, I would look longingly for the next issue of MacAddict magazine. It was new, it was bold, informative and it was entertaining. I loved the whimsical, funny and, as well, the practical side of it's many well written articles. And, oh, how I loved pouring through all of those yummy goodies found on their inclosed CD that was just chock full of Mac Software including games, internet resources, demos, freeware and other such software. From the silly to the serious side of things, that monthly CD held so much software that I seriously worried they would soon run out of new material. I was amazed that there was even that much Mac software in existence!MacAddict magazine first started to publish in 1994 and ran until 1996. It was published by Imagine Publishing, which is now known as Future US. The company also published, along with MacAddict, CD ROM Today, a simlar magazine but for the PC crowd. Even though I miss MacAddict, including it's stick figured mascot, Max, all is not lost, as MacAddict was simply re-branded and has now morphed into the excellent Mac magazine, MACLIFE, which I am proud to feature as my 'Site-4-the-Day.' MacLife, like it's older version, MacAddict, still puts out great content on a regular basis. The writing is still sharp and witty, informative and entertaining as it ever was when it was still called MacAddict, inspite of the fact that it no longer includes that very anticipated monthly CD.

3 Vote(s)

I remember how people, including Microsoft's colorful CEO, Steve Ballmer, balked and bitched that Apple's iPhone was, at $499 and $599, the world's highest priced phone and at those prices it would surely fail. At least, I'm sure, that is what they were hoping it would do. Of course, that wasn't actual true then, nor is it true today. Despite their nay sayings, such as only fan-boys, geeks and early adopters would end up buying a few, the iPhone was and is a great success despite all of the frenzy media attention it received, both good and bad.The funny thing, and the thing that really gets me, is that when some one other than Apple, lets say Prada, unveils another smart phone for $800 or even a $1,200 phone - nobody bitch's, nobody complains or says how it's going to utterly fail! Why is that? Well, RIM is now selling their own BlackBerry Bold and guess what? It sells for a whopping $660 at Best Buy and yet hardly anyone notices - let alone bitch's or complains! Why is it that RIM, Prada and whom ever, can sell a high priced phone and yet gets little to no attention, where, on the other hand, the iPhone and everything that Apple touch's is closely scrutinized by a horde of press coverage? I sincerely doubt if Steve Ballmer or anyone else is going to make a lot of noise, bitch, complain or predict that the Bold will ultimate fail

1 Vote(s)

Is Microsoft running scared of Apple, does it have reason to fear it's smaller rival? Well, if they are not - they should be! As many people are now pointing out, Microsoft has a lot to be afraid of, a fear that is manifested in Microsoft's massive $300,000,000 ad campaign to bolster it's image and that of it's much maligned OS, Vista. Despite Microsoft constantly portraying Apple as a small and inconsequential player, Apple, on it's part, is making real and dramatic gains, as Fortune points out and as their graphic clearly illustrates above. In fact, when compared to both companies recent quarterly results, Apple, though still smaller than Microsoft, still compares very favorably with it's much bigger competitor. Not only does it compare favorably, but Apple looms very big and nowhere near as small or as insignificant as Microsoft would have us all believe. The truth is that Apple's, at the moment, is doing considerably better than Microsoft. Considering Apple's present rate of growth, some people are even beginning to wonder if Apple may actually do the unthinkable and - become bigger than Microsoft! As you can clearly see from the chart above, when it comes to the year-to-year revenue growth rate, cash-on-hand, market share, or revenue (non-GAAP) profit (non-GAAP), Apple is anything but a small and insignificant player. Apple, in fact, is now even richer than Microsoft and it's cash horde is now some five billion dollars bigger than Microsoft's own!

2 Vote(s)

Apparently, the Mac Mini's death has been greatly exaggerated, as reports coming out suggest that the diminutive computer days may not be numbered after all! Apple Insider reports that informed players say that Apple Mac Mini is still kickin. This is great news for all Mini fan's, myself included. There have been lots of speculation, recently and in the past, that the Mini was to go EOL (end of life) any day now. In fact, Apple Insider says that according to another report new features are coming to the Mini that are all but 100% confirmed!Any death of the Mac Mini would be more than a blow to the poor among us who have been hoping to buy a new Mac, but also, very surprising to me, also a big blow to many, many business's that have been buying up the Mini at a rate twice that of consumers! Apparently, the liliputian computer makes for a great and very economical server. Apple Insider, for example, reports that in the city of Las Vegas alone, one source estimates, that there are at least 10,000 Mini's running in the various hotels and casino's of the sprawling desert city, were they do duty as servers and for security purposes

2 Vote(s)

Thus far, most of the reviews of the new MacBook and it's big brother, the Pro, have been, for the most part, quite favorable. The biggest complaints have been mostly in the area of the exclusion of having a matte option for the Pro, or the lack of Firewire in the lower priced MacBook. Oh, and let's not forget the higher price! That's a big complaint, especially now in a world of such frightening economic uncertainty. Apart from that, well, the reviews have been mostly positive as I have said. However, the one thing that seems to stand out, in a lot of these reviews, is the fact that the MacBook is, in reality, nothing more, nothing less than a smaller version of the MacBook Pro. The underlining specs, for the most part, are identical. Of course, the biggest differences, apart from the Pro's higher price, is the lack of Firewire on the lower priced MacBook and the Pro's beefier twin NVidia graphic capabilities, otherwise, the physical appearance is pretty much the same. Personally, from afar, I can't even distinguish them apart, as they look so much alike. Even close up, the only way that I can tell the difference between them is by looking at the name plate on the bottom of the bezel. I'm not sure if that is good news for MacBook owners, or, on the other hand, bad news for MacBook Pro owners?

2 Vote(s)

Mission accomplished! Apple has easily met and exceeded it's goal of selling some 10 million iPhone's in it's first year! Not only that, but on the way, they not only also surpassed RIM, the maker of the popular Blackberry smart phone, they became, in the process, the world's third largest phone supplier in terms of revenue generated, and, more interestingly, not only that - Apple became bigger than Microsoft! Well, bigger, that is, than Microsoft in the 'money-in-the-bank category. As it now stands, Apple now sits on a very, very big pile of cash - some 24.5 billion dollars! The only other company that has more cash is Cisco, with some 26 billion dollars, but unlike Apple, which is 100 % free of debt, Cisco has some 7 billion of debt on their books, so in reality, Apple is even bigger than Cisco after subtracting Cisco's debt! Microsoft, of course, is still bigger, much bigger than Apple in either sales, profits, market cap or what have you. Well, after all of that said, what I personally wouldn't give to see the expression on Microsoft's CEO, Steve Ballmer's face right now. This is epecially, as you might remember, after Mr. Ballmer laughed at the mere mention of the iPhone, telling a reporter, with a big smirk on his face, that it had to be the most expensive phone in history, and that even though Apple might make some money on it, it would never really catch on. He boasted that he much more preferred Microsoft's own strategy, because as a business phone, the iPhone would never appeal to anyone simply because it lacked a physical keyboard!

2 Vote(s)

Unfortunately, if your really big into to games than you basically have no real option - you' ll need Windows! That, in the past, has been a real bummer for Mac and Linux users. Fortunately, however, if your lucky or rich enough to have one of the new, but expensive, MacBook Pro's, than it means never having to be sorry again! No sire, not for one itty bitty minute, because now, thanks to all of the new NVidia graphic horsepower contained there in, the new Mac's can easily play all of them hardware intensive games pretty dang well, thank you very much.Obbessable's C.K. Sample III, recently installed, via Boot Camp, Warhammer on a new MacBook Pro and took it for a test drive and gave it a hearty big thumbs up! As you can see, by clicking on the above YouTube video, Warhammer, running on the Mac, runs and looks pretty cool in-spite of the poor quality of the video itself. The reviewer even noticed that game play on the new MacBook Pro was, in fact, actually smoother and better than the performance that he got from his HP Pavilion PC! That's something that a lot of people, myself included, would have found to be completely unthinkable not that long ago. Not any more, mind you, because the newest MacBook Pro is definitely a power house that can compete with the very best of the higher end PC laptops out there. And, of course, it should, considering just how high all of this yummy goodness will set you back.

2 Vote(s)

So, now that the dust is beginning to settle on the recent introduction of Apple's newest and greatest MacBook's, the question, in my mind, is how well will they sell? Apparently, if you take a glance at the top ten best selling list from Amazon, that would be amazingly well, as recently reported by MacDailyNews. And the really amazing thing, in all of this, is the simple fact that the new MacBook's are not only already selling well, but are selling well indespite of Apple's famous high prices!Apparently, Apple really does know best, and, I guess, this is also true when it comes to pricing. After all, as Piper Jaffray analyst, Andrew Murphy, wrote in an e-mail yesterday, when it comes to Apple, " They've never done cheap well - but the $999 MacBook is a good start."I have to admit, that even though I thought that the new models would sell, I didn't exactly expect, for a moment, that they would sell that well, or sell quite that fast! Of course, the truth of the matter, is that these machines are all first class acts, luxury models that are premarily aimed at the well-to-do in the first place. They are not perfect mind you, but then again, no laptop, note book, net book, or what ever you wish to call them is.

8 Vote(s)

A lot of people of had it up to here with Vista and that's not just consumers, the ones who actually buy the computers running Vista, but also the very manufacturers themselves. From the blogo-sphere to the main street press, people are are now beginning to report on a skunk works project by computer giant HP to explore the idea of developing it's own Linux based OS, one that would allow it to completely bypass Windows Vista altogether. HP's OS would be designed primarily for home users and would be much simpler to use than any of the other existing Linux distro's, including that of the most popular, Ubuntu. The idea of HP developing their own OS poses more than a mere threat to Windows itself - it also poses a direct threat to Apple's OS X! The question is: could HP, if it ever decides develop their own alternative OS, actually become a credible threat to either Windows or the Mac, and, if so, is there anything that Microsoft or Apple could do to nullify the effect that any new OS might incur? HP has shown with it's Touch Smart and Voodoo laptops that it can design and build innovative computers that are equally on par with anything that Apple can deliver, except, of course, on the OS side. It is here that HP and other companies have little control and they are forced to put up with inferior software on their superior hardware, which has got to irritate the hell out of them. As for HP, I love their hardware. Their products are imaginative and of very high quality and just like Apple, HP incorporates a lot of nice little touch's that make their products especially desirable and I have no doubt that same quality and thoughtfulness would also be reflected in any new OS that HP might like to undertake to develop, but it would take years.

2 Vote(s)

In a new patent submission, AppleInsider is reporting that Apple is planning a much more accurate and far richer featured future generation of iPod/Nike+ systems that would provide much better monitoring of an athlete. This more advance system would provide real-time workout information and add features that would make the current models seem totally primitive. One of the more exciting features would have Apple incorporating a GPS unit in future systems that would, for example, let a jogger not only know where he or she is at all times, but could be also used to flash advertisements as the jogger neared various establishments or points of interest. For example, a thirsty jogger would know that they could quench their thirst at a nearby Star Bucks that was 300 ft, to the left, from their current location! Also, I could imagine, that it could be used to monitor more accurately the distance traveled and distance remaining in planned jogs, as well as giving out better ETA's, etc.AppleInsider also states that additional sensors could be implanted in a shoes to let the runner know that the shoe itself was running down and should be replaced for maximum efficiency and safety!

2 Vote(s)

Apple's "Let's Rock" presentation has come and gone and, as expected, what came out of the event were new iPod Nano's, Classic's, Shuffle's and the star of the show, a new and greatly improved iPod Touch, in addition to an updated iTune's, now at version 8.0, and two brand new sets of iPod ear buds. Also, yesterday's had a big surprise - NBC announced that it was returning to iTunes! This was totally unexpected, but, none-the-less, a very welcome development for iTunes which now boasts a catalog of over 8,500,000 different songs! With well over five billion songs sold, iTune's is the largest distributor of music and movies in the U.S. by far!Regarding the iPod Nano, it now comes in nine vibrant colors and sports a thinner and a slightly curved aluminum form factor and now features an accelerometer that can easily transport you instantly, with a flip of the wrist, into the iPod's Cover Flow mode or it's the shuffle mode. Nicer still, is the fact that Nano's now come, like all iPod's, with newer and much lower prices, namely $149 for the 8 GB version and $199 for the 16 GB model. The iPod Shuffle itself, though not directly mentioned by Mr. Jobs, was basically unchanged except for getting some new hand-me-down colors and the lower price points of $49 and $69 for both the 1 and 2 GB versions

9 Vote(s)

Today, in a few hours time, Apple is expected to unveil a completely revamped line of iPods and according to AppleInsider sources have revealed to them that the popular Nano will be getting some kind of motion sensor. As to the purpose of such a sensor, I can only speculate that it will be used as some kind of pedometer that would fit in nicely with the iPod's Nike feature. AppleInsider also reports that the elongated Nano will also be available in nine different colors and will be the first non-multi-touch device built by Apple that comes with some sort of motion sensor. Purple, Orange and Yellow are being added to the other colors and have me scratching my head, especially the purple color Nano. Other than maybe the artist formally known as Prince, I can't see who would want such a purple colored iPod, but who knows, it might just be a winner? The venerable Apple rumor site is also reporting that the Nano will be available in two sizes, 8 and 16GB; the Touch will remain untouched at 8, 16 and 32GB.Personally, I was really hoping that the Nano would get some kind of touch screen. Multi-touch, of course, on such a small screen would be over kill, but a simple touch feature that would allow you to flip through a Cover Flow list of your songs would have been nifty.

4 Vote(s)

One of the coolest things about the Harry Potter movies is how the pictures on the walls, the books and the newspapers move and virtually come alive. The effect is truly magical and now that magic is about to become common place, all thanks to the magic of high-tech digital paper, or flexible screens complete with moving text and images!Erica A. Taub, writing in the New York Times, recently wrote that Plastic Logic will finally be introducing a flexible digital newspaper that can wirelessly download and hold hundreds of newspaper pages. This, as of yet, unnamed device will be about the size of a sheet of copier paper and will use the same technology as found in Amazon's popular Kindle and Sony's eReader. It will feature the look, but naturally, not quite the feel of a regular paper.Plastic Logic says that their new device will be 2.5 times larger than the Kindle, but amazingly will only weigh in at two ounces! Compare that to the weight of many big city newspapers, like that of the New York Times itself, which can easily weigh in at five pounds or more and you can just imagine the numbers of trees that could be spared. The other big difference, as compared to Sony's or Amazon's devices, will be that this new 'magical' newspaper will use a flexible plastic rather than the rigid glass found on current book readers. This flexible screen, someday at least, will mean that you should be able to bend and roll it much like today's traditional newspapers and simply place it in your pant pockets!

3 Vote(s)

The first of Microsoft's $300,000,000 ads have appeared and as you can see by clicking on the above YouTube video - it ain't worth a dime! It simply doesn't make much sense at all! It just rambles on and on and doesn't really say much anything. There's no mention on how great Vista is, or how good it really is in comparison to all of the bad press that it has received - I mean, isn't that the whole point of the campaign - to fix both Vista's and Microsoft's image and make them look cool like Apple? In the commercial Jerry walks by and sees Bill Gates buying shoes at a shoe store oddly called the Shoe Circus. After walking in, Jerry helps Uncle Bill purchase some new shoes. Later, after they both exit the shoe store, Jerry asks Bill, something along the lines, "Are they ever going to make computers moist and delicious like cake, so we can eat them while we work? If so, give me a sign by adjusting your shorts!" Bill complies by wiggling his butt and Jerry responds by saying, "I knew it!" The idea, I guess, is that Microsoft is working on something really delicious for the next version of Windows. But I thought that the whole idea was to make the 'here and now' Vista look cool, and to help reverse all of the bad press that it has garnered over it's first one year of existence, and to help correct any damaged caused by Apple's famous, "I'm a PC, I'm a Mac" ads?Well, if you ask me, Uncle Bill is going to have to adjust a lot more than his shorts if he thinks that Microsoft is going to get it's money worth out of this campaign! Of course, I realize that this is only the very first of a series of ads that will be blanketing the media over the next little while. Maybe these ads will achieve what they set out to do, but certainly not if they continue along the lines of the first. Considering the purpose of the ads, to help Vista's image, well, I honestly don't think it's working.

5 Vote(s)

Apple, among many other companies, is working on advancing multi-touch input for various products such as OS"s, phones and mpg 3 players, etc. Microsoft has already demonstrated it's intent on adding multi-touch to it's next version of Window, but now, however, a very interesting patent filing from Apple has emerged that suggests that the Cupertino giant is about to add a significant twist to multi-touch - one that would bring it more inline with something straight out of Star Trek than anything that Microsoft is planning to do.Reports are now coming in that suggests that Apple is planning to mix multi-touch with other input technologies such as voice and visual cues. This means, for example, that if you were drawing a line with your finger, you could easily change or add color by simply speaking, "green, red, blue," or what have you? You could also just as easily add or change the line thickness of an object, or by simply exhibiting a frown on your face, the visual cue would then trigger the computer to recognize that you weren't pleased and then accordingly change the situation! Similarly, a smile would let the computer know that you were please with something and correctly maintain course!MacNN reports that the September 4 filing would allow it to, "...... gain an advantage thereby increasing the efficiency and performance of inputting operations." This certainly would give it more flexibility and advantage over other's attempts to develop their own brand of multi-touch. It would clearly set Apple as the leader in multi-touch design. The patent application, by the way, is titled "Multi-Touch Data Fusion," which MacNN describes in much further detail if you interested in learning more.

2 Vote(s)

It's been rumored for some time now, but now it's been officially confirmed: Apple will indeed hold a Special Event this coming September 9 to introduce, well, something? Arstechnica is one of several news sites that have been given a invitation to a special event from Apple called, "Let's Rock." As you can see, illustrated above, the invitation includes one of those famous iTune silhouettes of a man dancing to an iPod. This naturally suggests that Apple is about to introduce newer and lower priced iPods. Nothing, as Arstechnica points out, however, suggests that this event will also include the much rumored MacBook or iMac updates as well, but they are still rumored to also be coming in the immediate weeks following the September 9th. event. Some are also hoping that this event will include the long rumored introduction of the Beatles to the iTune catalogue. I, for one, certainly hope that this is the case. The Beatles would be a really big deal, and would drive iTune sales through the roof as they say. The Beatles may have disbanded a long time ago, but their drawing power still, despite all of these many years, is as strong as ever, as more and more younger listeners are not only discovering their music, but loving it as well.As for me, I'm hoping, first and foremost, that any iPod announcement will be quickly followed up by those MacBook, iMac and MacPro's rumors. In the meantime, I am hoping that any iPod upgrades will also include iPod Touch's that will finally get an external speaker. For crying out pizza with anchovies, the Touch should have had those speakers from the very get go! Of course, Apple had to first consider carefully it's possible impact on the iPhone, but now that the G3 is finally here, it's time to give the Touch the added touch of external speakers, which in turn, would help make the Touch an even greater hand-held gaming rig than it already is!

2 Vote(s)

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's colorful CEO, and other top executives, no doubt, where all smiles as the press seemingly gave their thumbs up in their reviews of the upcoming Explorer 8. Explorer 8 has been getting rave reviews for basically offering what other browsers already have been offering, such as Safari's "Private Browsing" feature, which Explorer 8 calls, "In Private". Unfortunately, despite all the praise for Explorer's stability, security and what have you, Mr. Ballmer's face is probably anything but smiling now. The reason is that Microsoft's paranoia over all things Google is about to boil over as the long held rumors of Google entering Explorer's turf turns out to be true after all. It is now being wildly reported that Google is unleashing a direct competitor and threat to both Explorer and Firefox called Chrome!Google's Chrome browser is being made available earlier than expected after Google accidentally released a 'comic style' media release. Chrome is being described as being much faster, more secure and more stable than other browsers and was designed with the next generation of web content, such as internet banking, chat, web-based games and video in mind.

13 Vote(s)

In a game of follow the leader, Microsoft has indicated that, like Google's Android app store, it too will follow Apple's lead by creating it's very own app store for Windows Mobile. Microsoft recently posted a job opening for a product manager for it's app store that is tentatively known as Skymarket. Microsoft, on it's part, doesn't exactly plan to introduce Skymarket until it first unveils it's new Windows Mobile 7 platform sometime later next year in 2009. As AppleInsider noted:"The posting also indicates Microsoft hasn't made much progress so far about its conceptual goals for the store."After all, as they also noted, it's been a half-decade since Windows Mobile was launched, but ever since reaching a high of 23%, Windows Mobile has been in steady decline. Today, Windows Mobile market share has slipped to approximately 12% - a major decline indeed. Apple, on the other hand, has already captured, in it's first six months, and seemingly out of nowhere, a very respectable 7% of the smart phone market.

2 Vote(s)

When it comes to people who are planning on purchasing a new computer in the U.S., more of those people, some 32%, are planning to buy a Mac over that of any other brand. This is in comparison to some 28% of people who are planning to buy a Dell, which rates number two, on a survey of some 4,000 people conducted recently by ChangeWave Research.MacWorld reported that Paul Carton, ChangeWave's director of research, said that Apple's 32% (for planned purchases) seems to be permanent. This is a remarkable considering where Apple was at one point in time, not that long ago. Apparently, according to Mr. Carton, the 'halo' effect from both the iPod and the iPhone has had a very positive influence on people's intentions to buy a new computer. For example, the Mac's share of intended computer purchases jumped an amazing 6.5% immediately after the first generation iPhone was unveiled, and helping to put to rest any doubts about any 'halo' effect by Apple's critics.Another factor believed to have contributed to the Mac's number one showing is Apple's customer satisfaction rate, the highest in the industry. Some 81% of all new Mac owners have reported that they are extremely satisfied with their Mac purchases. In comparison, Dell for example, only showed a 58% satisfaction rate, HP a 57% and Acer and Lenovo showed only 48 and 43% satisfaction rates. Clearly, Apple shines over it's competitor's.

2 Vote(s)

In Dubai they dream big, they dream bold and they dream tall. They also build big, bold and build tall. Dubai is already home to the tallest skyscraper ever built - the Burj Dubai. This slim, sleek and futuristic skyscraper literally looks down upon anything and everything that man has ever built - the CNN tower, the Sears tower, Tapai 101 and that symbol of past American pride, the Empire State, which compared to the Burj Dubai is a mere dwarf.Dubai isn't stopping with the Burj Dubai either. No sir, when you got the oil, you got the money and when you got that, well, you got the power to do just about anything that you want, like design and build modern pyramids that will make the ancient pyramids of Egypt look like mere children's building blocks.Yes, it might seem incredible, it might seem strange and totally impossible, but where talking about Dubai here. Recently plans have been revealed to build not just a pyramid, but a pyramid city - a city of over one million people!

2 Vote(s)

Regarding the Mac's growing adoption rate in the enterprise market, the Balitmore Sun recently stated that:"Apple's success with consumers has begun to spill over into the enterprise market, with Mac adoption among enterprise customers increasing four-fold in less than two years.Mac use in businesses rose from 1.1 percent in October 2006 to 4.5 percent in June of this year, according to a report by analyst Benjamin Gray of Forrester Research released Friday and made public by eWeek's Joe Wilcox. While 4.5 percent of the enterprise market may appear puny next to the nearly 95 percent held by Microsoft's Windows, it is nevertheless startling that the Mac has made any headway at all in a market in which it had languished for years."Yes, the Mac is indeed back, both in the consumer and now the business market as well. Of course, as many know, the ubiquitous iPod and now the iPhone has played a crucial role in exposing the Mac to the public. This has resulted in the Mac suddenly becoming discovered by literally millions of new people who would have never given it a mere glance before. In turn, these legends of new and contented Mac switchers have been bringing their enthusiasm for all things Mac back to their work places, and thus exposing the positive benefits to their employers as well, and, as we can plainly see, resulting in more Mac's being used there.

16 Vote(s)

Apple's new iPhone G3 has been getting a bad rap lately. People have been complaining that they are getting no where near the promised G3 speeds, and worse, they are getting dropped calls! Apple even updated the software in hopes of fixing the issue, but despite some success, people are still reporting that they are still experiencing the same issue's which, according to Apple, only effect approximately two percent of G3 iPhone's. But is Apple and it's incredibly popular phone really the culprit, are they really to be blamed for it's rash of problems, or is the blame to be put on other source's?Not according to some. Reports are now beginning to surface that the recent iPhone G3 problems are not due to the phone itself, nor to Apple, but rather they are due mostly to the individual carriers of the phone! Some countries have great service, others do not!

1 Vote(s)

We have heard the rumors again and again and from various sources, in the past, that iTunes was about to launch an all-you-can-eat subscription service. Well, I guess the cat came back, because the iTune subscription rumors have resurfaced yet again.Sources such as Endgadget are now talking about Apple's ubiquitous iTune service adding an all-you-can-eat subscription service by as early as years end. Some are even saying that such an iTune service would come with the unheard of price of only $129 per-year, which would seriously undercut it's rivals such as Napster and others that typically charge around $180 annually.Steve Jobs has repeatedly said that consumers prefer to "own their music", a fact that can be easily demonstrated and seen from the lack luster sales of the present subscription based service providers. So, at first glance, it really doesn't seem to make much sense that Apple would, all of a sudden, make a complete 180 degree turn by offering an iTunes subscription option in light of the competitor's low subscription rates, now would it?Of course, these rumors are just that - rumors! They should be taken, like all rumors, with a grain of salt. Still, like many, I'm intrigued by the idea of a possible iTune subscription service, but could there really be any benefits to such a service? I think so

2 Vote(s)
