Where do the seeds of innovation for much of the tech world come from these days? Well, where else, from where they have mostly always have - they are coming from the field of dreams that just happens to have it's address at 1 Infinite Loop, Cuupertino, Calfornia.
Zach Bass recently wrote an interesting article titled, "Apple Imitations: Just Like the iPhone, Only Crappier," for SeekingAlpha that outlines how tech companies and organizations like Dell, HP, Gateway, Microsoft, or Linux, have all one thing in common - they continue to advance by ritually copying many, if not all, of Apple's innovations, but never quite equalling them.
In other words: Apple is the leader in tech, the rest of the tech world are mere followers.

Apple is not the only innovator out there - it just seems that way. Apple didn't invent mpg players, they just innovated a better one. The list goes on. Of course, in the case of innovation, Apple has indeed been one of the best and certainly the best in marketing. The other day I noticed how Sony's new Vaio copied the MacBook's keyboard. I could go on, but on, but you are correct laneyjane, Apple is not the only innovator. Just one of the best and definitely the most visible.
I won't deny Apple is a definite innovator but seeing how I have Windows on my home pc's and Linux on my server I can't sit here and agree that Apple is the innovator of all. My husband works for Nabisco and it would seem that his company originates a majority of the new ideas for snack products; like the 100 calorie packs which was then copied by Keebler, Frito Lay, Little Debbie, etc... However, unique ideas are created the other companies as well. Lets be real, just like keebler copying the 100 calorie packs, linux and Windows would be crazy not to jump on the popular bandwagon. I give Apple a lot of credit but good ideas surface from many different facets.
When it comes to copying, Microsoft is the leader! It's the one thing they do best!
"they continue to advance by ritually copying many."
Love it!
